one thing people often ask me is how the mountain man has felt adapting to my gluten free diet. he’s been incredibly supportive, and tried a barrage of horrible gluten free products with me, but for the most part, it hasn’t had a huge impact on him (or so i think!). we still keep the house stocked with his favorite gluten-riffic treats, and it’s not uncommon for me to make 2 side dishes with our meals – one for me, and one for him. that said, switching to gluten free living wasn’t a giant shift from how we already ate. i’ve learned to make a lot of dishes he likes sans-gluten, and the few that just don’t translate well, i serve up for him traditional style, like the sloppy joe and beer fiesta pictured above. plus, there are always meals out, like at our favorite pizza joint where i get a loaded salad while he chows down on a pie.

in the end, it’s all about balance. while i sometimes feel deprived of my favorite foods, it doesn’t mean i expect him to be deprived of it too. i think there is definitely a way to strike a balance when just one person in a relationship has a food allergy, and while it’s a little more work on occasion, it’s a lot better than everyone being miserable over food!

so back to you – how do you make the balance work? has your kitchen become a gluten free zone?
